ONE WORLD, ONE HEALTH

I want to start my blog with a topic that is very important for me to treat and teach people and this is “one world, one health”. Everything in the world is connected, we all are just one (planet earth) and for its proper functioning we must all respect our place in this world. However, we as humans are damaging our planet and ending the habitat of thousands of animal species, managing to bring some of these to extinction. Humans are selfish beings and according to Richard Dawkins, professor of Ethology at the University of Oxford (United Kingdom), every species that has evolved from natural selection possesses this gene. But humans have been characterized by underestimating the rest of the species and putting our interests above anyone else.

A clear example of this and the topic in which I want to base on is deforestation. Now, talking about the Amazon, or better called as (the lung of our planet) where fires are increasingly common thanks to deforestation, as this causes natural water cycles to be altered, and consequently, it rains less and the soil is drier, which makes it easier to start fires. But not going so far, here in our city (Medellín) we have deforestation, such as the works in the green tunnel that aims at section 2B of the metroplus in the municipality of Envigado where 22 trees have been felled out of 133 that they plan to cut down for the realization of the project. It should be noted that maintaining an ecosystem in good condition is very important, because trees generate oxygen, regulate temperature and that freshness creates microclimates that favor the surrounding ecosystems. When an ecosystem is modified, as was done here in the Green Tunnel, that has an impact in other ecosystems.

WE ARE NOT CREATING SUSTAINABLE CITIES, we are not complying with SDG 11 and 15, because we are only creating roads, buildings and we are not connecting all of these with bicycle paths or more sustainable forms of mobility. A proof of this is the following interview with 2 people. In which the 2 of them agree that there are not enough bicycle paths and this has been discouraging when using other means of transport different than their own car. According to a study carried out by the Medellín secretariat, only 1% of the total daily trips in Medellín are made by bicycle (50,000 trips) and I have to highlight that there are only 21 km of bike paths in the entire city. In the following interview you can see that people like the idea of being sustainable and helping the environment but most of the time it is hard to put it into practice taking into account the topography of our city and the lack of bicycle paths. Also it is important to educate people toward a more sustainable world and teach them small actions to contribute to the environment.
